JANKO TIPSAREVIC all set to charm India again, at Aircel Chennai Open 2016

CHENNAI, 30th November 2015: Tennis fans witnessing sporting action at Aircel Chennai Open 2016 will witness the return of one of the tournament's favorites, 2013 singles champion and a former top 10 player - Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic, who will be back to battle it out at the US $480,000 prize money event between 4th – 10th January 2016.

On his seventh visit to participate in South Asia's only and India's premier ATP tournament, Janko has made the main draw using his entry protected ranking of 39, making it to the list of 10 players from the top 50. The last player in the main draw, Ukraine’s Illya Marchenko, will now feature in the Alternates list. With Janko’s inclusion, the 20th edition of the tournament in Chennai will see 10 players from amongst the world’s top 50.

In 2013, Tipsarevic had a dream start to the season when he won in Chennai, defeating Bautista Agut (Spain) in three sets 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 and capturing the fourth ATP World Tour title of his career.

In March this year, Janko made a return to the ATP World Tour after making a recovery from injury and subsequent surgery. He partnered Novak Djokovic in the first round of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Miami. The very next month, he won his first ATP World Tour singles match since 21 October 2013 in Valencia. This marked his first singles win since 1 October 2013 in Tokyo. Partnering Djokovic, Janko also reached the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Montreal semi final.

In the 2012 edition of the Aircel Chennai Open, Tipsarevic lost to 21-year-old Canadian Milos Raonic in an epic three hour and 14-minute singles final. Immediately following this match, Tipsarevic won the 2012 doubles crown with Indian ace Leander Paes in front of a full-house centre court crowd.

An exceptional line-up of top talent is preparing to play in Chennai. Cutting off at 94, the impressive player field will see World No. 4 Stan Wawrinka, Chennai-debutant World No. 12 Kevin Anderson, World no. 19 and ATP's Comeback Player of the Year 2015 Benoit Paire, World No. 25 Roberto Bautista-Agut, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, Gilles Muller, Vasek Pospisil, Borna Coric and Aljaz Bedene among others.

The Title Sponsor for the tournament is Aircel and the event is supported by a consortium of sponsors in the Platinum and Gold category, headed by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

ADHM 2015: Legese and Limo clinch gold at the 2015 Airtel Delhi Half Marathon

Legese and Limo clinch gold at the 2015 Airtel Delhi Half Marathon

Babbar shatters the ADHM course record, clocks India’s fastest Half Marathon time; Nitender Singh Rawat takes the men’s title

29th November 2015: Ethiopia’s Birhanu Legese and Kenya’s Cynthia Limo came out on top after thrilling battles over the last kilometre for both the men’s and women’s titles at 2015 Airtel Delhi Half Marathon on Sunday (29 November)

In the Indian Elite section, Nitendra Singh Rawat and Lalita Babbar emerged victorious. All the three women podium finishers – Lalita Babbar, OP Jaisha and Sudha Singh - broke the ADHM Course Record set in 2008 by Kavita Raut (01:17:12) and Lalita Babbar clocked the fastest ever Half marathon time (01:10:52) by Indian Women.

In the international athletes, leading pack of 10 runners went through 10km in 27:56, five men were still in contention with just 500 metres to go ahead of the finish line in the Indian capital’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

After an initial surge by Ethiopia’s Mosinet Geremew, Legese overtook his compatriot with barely 100 metres remaining and crossed the line in a personal best of 59:20, with Geremew one second in arrears.

“I am very happy, I enjoyed the course and enjoyed the race. It was very easy for me,” reflected Legese, after clinching the $27,000 winner’s cheque. His time equalled the third-fastest time in the world this year”.

Just 21, Legese notched up his second major half marathon victory this year, having also won the Berlin Half Marathon back in March where he set his previous best of 59:45. In Delhi, he was just 14 seconds outside the course record set in 2014 by another Ethiopia, Guye Adola.

Eritrea’s world record holder Zersenay Tadese, now 33, did not quite have the sheer acceleration of his younger rivals over the final few hundred metres on Sunday but will still have been satisfied with third place in 59:24, his fastest time for more than four Years.

The Kenyan pair of Edwin Kiptoo, who made much of the pace from halfway at 22 km/hr running speed until the final kilometre, and Jonathan Maiyo finished fourth and fifth respectively but were given the same time of 59:26.

The depth of world-class performances – only two other half marathons in history have had five men run under 59:30 – confirms the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon as one of the premier races in the world over the distance.

Limo took the women’s race in 1:08:35 after outsprinting her compatriots Helah Kiprop and Gladys Chesire over the last 200 metres, although she always looked the most likely to triumph after increasing the tempo at the front of the race with three kilometres to go. Kiprop snatched second place in the final 30 metres and was given the same time as the winner while Chesire was one second further back to complete an all-Kenyan women’s podium.

In the Indian Elite women, Lalita Babar, OP Jaisha, Sudha Singh were neck to neck through-out the race. Eventually, Lalita took six and half minutes off the ADHM course record with a time of 1:10:52. Jaisha (1:11:43) finished closely behind Lalita followed by Sudha Singh 1:11:46. In addition to Rs 3,00,000 prize money, Lalita also won the course jackpot of Rs 1,50,000.

In the Indian Elite Men, Nitender  Singh gave a tough fight to Kenyan Bett but could not surpass him. He eventually took the podium at 01:04:41 to collect Rs. 3,00,000 prize money in the Elite Indian Men category. Gopi T, who followed Nitender through-out the race, finished 2nd to collect Rs. 2,50,000 and Mohd. Yunus finished at 3rd place with Rs. 1,75,000.

A total of 34,015 runners participated in the 8th Airtel Delhi Half Marathon including 13,200 amateurs, over 70 international athletes;  19,015 enthusiasts participated in the Great Delhi Run while 400 brave hearts finished the race in the Champions with Disability category and 800 in the  Senior Citizen category.

Chennai to Get India's First Transgender Sub Inspector

the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB) began recruitment for 1087 SI posts. The process was in three stages - a written examination, physical endurance test and viva-voice. Among over 1.85 lakh applicants, K. Prithika Yashini, a transgender, had also applied for the post. However, the petitioner’s application was rejected by TNUSRB on the ground that she did not fall under the available two categories of gender.
Thereafter, Ms. Prithika moved the High Court and she was allowed to appear for the written examination.
Aided by the High Court’s interim orders at each stage of the selection process, the petitioner managed to complete the entire recruitment process. But at the final stage, TNUSRB refused to recruit the petitioner citing various reasons, including that she failed to qualify in the physical endurance test. Ms. Prithika approached the court again.
When the petition came up for hearing, the First Bench, comprising Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana, pointed out that the Board had failed to provide for the third gender category in the application form, despite a Supreme Court direction.
Referring the submissions made by the Board in its counter affidavit that two other transgender candidates were already serving as police constables in the State, the Bench said, “The social impact of such recruitment cannot be lost sight of, this would give strength to the case of transgenders. We are thus of the view that the petitioner is entitled to be recruited as SI with the hope that she would carry out the duties with dedication and commitment to advance the cause of other transgenders,” the Bench added.
The Bench also appreciated the efforts made by advocate Bhavani Subbarayan, counsel for the petitioner, and the fair stand of P.H. Arvindh Pandian, the Additional Advocate General.
